Sport

Sport is an important component of the Physical Education curriculum. Students are involved in clinics, school sports events and inter-school sports events. There are four sport teams: MacKillop (Red), McAuley (Blue), Xavier (Gold) and Padua (Green). Each of the team names has a special connection to St Francis Xavier School.

MacKillop (Red)

Red team is named after Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint. Mary was born in East Melbourne in 1842, and died in 1909. She established the Sisters of St Joseph. She started many schools for the poorer working classes in Australia.

McAuley (Blue)

Blue team is named after Catherine McAuley (1778-1841), who established the religious order of Sisters of Mercy in Ireland. She was kind and caring, and looked after the sick and poor. The Sisters of Mercy started St Francis Xavier School, Corio, in 1976.

Xavier (Gold)

Gold team is named after St Francis Xavier. St Francis was born in Spain (1506-1552), the son of wealthy parents. He devoted himself to religious service and was one of the founders of the Jesuit Order. Our parish and school are named after him.

Padua (Green)

Green team is named for St Anthony of Padua (1190-1231). He was born in Portugal and led a religious life, becoming a great preacher of the Church, particularly in Italy and France. He is also the namesake of Lara parish. Father Pius is the parish priest for the Corio/Lara parishes, who work alongside each other.
